German Noble Hops:

Grand Cru, best of the best, cream of the crop…all of these terms perfectly describe the category of hops known as German Noble Hops.  These hops are classic German and Czech varieties that lend characteristic flavors to some of our favorite beer styles! 

There are 4 varieties of Noble Hops:

• Hallertauer Mittelfruh
• Tettnang Tettnanger
• Spalt
• Saaz

These historic hops have been cultivated for hundreds and hundreds of years, and are featured in the original Bohemian Pilsner, German Pils, Marzen, Dunkel, and so many more traditional European beer styles. 

German Noble Hops are known for their distinct flavor and aroma:

• Spicy
• Citrusy
• Floral

Here at Sam Adams, we use German Noble Hops in a wide variety of our beers, including our Octoberfest and our flagship beer the Boston Lager.  Our founder, Jim Koch, actually helped revive the Hallertauer hop in the 90’s and was appointed “Chevalier of the Order of the Hop”.  Now put that in your pint and sip it!
