At Sam Adams, we celebrate International Women’s Day by raising a pint to women in the beer industry. Along with breweries all around the world, we participate in the Pink Boots Society Collaboration Brew Day, with 2023 marking our sixth annual brew.
A champion within the alcohol industry, the Pink Boots Society’s mission is to “assist, inspire, and encourage the professional development and education of women and non-binary individuals.” They do this through funding scholarships, sharing resources, and cultivating relationships.
For 2023, we've brewed the newest iteration of our Pink Boots Brew, The Future is FemAle, in honor of the strong team of women behind Samuel Adams. True to our resourceful tendencies, this session sour utilizes locally-harvested wild yeast that a few of our female brewers collected and propagated.
Our Assistant Quality Manager describes the process.
“I know of a local quince source in Boston. When I got them last season, I noticed some white powder and figured there was a good chance there was wild yeast growing on the quinces. I joked about gathering and brewing a beer with it during a meeting with our Research Brewing Team (s/o Hannah & Christina), and they dared me to try.
Hannah, Christina, Alexis, and I gathered the fruit on a rainy November afternoon. I made two rounds of streak plates from the little fermentations on petri dishes to see what I could find and do my best to isolate them. Our Research Brewer Hannah and I then made a four-tank beer experiment where the same wort was fermented by our house ale yeast and the three winners.
During our first brainstorming session for this year’s Pink Boots brew, I realized that this whole process of bringing this beer to life had happened organically and that the work had all been done by coworkers who happen to be women.”
The final product uses the 2023 Pink Boots Society hop blend from Yakima Chief Hops and quince and guava juices to create a beer bright with citrus and herbal notes.
Join us for the release parties at both of our Boston locations on International Women's Day, March 8th from 5 to 8PM. The Future is FemAle will be available on draft and in cans, with a portion of the proceeds donated back to the Pink Boots Society.
For the release, we’re featuring local entrepreneur Chica De Gallo with a full food menu takeover including nachos, queso, and fruited pico. The same evening, our friends at Sofar Sounds will be putting on a ticketed showcase of local female musicians in the brewhouse.

To celebrate the beer release, we'll be showcasing 3 amazing female artists - Hayden Elizabeth, Lindsay Whiteman and Zoe Sparks - starting at 5pm in our Beer Hall and highlighting a special food pairing in partnership with our Brewing The American Dream friends from Sweet Tahini!
In March and April, Samuel Adams will donate $5,000 to the Pink Books Society.
