In Herb We Trust

“He was always a good resource. If you needed anything, you could always call him up and he’d share knowledge freely. He had a big heart. I’m really glad he was my friend.” -Bob Cannon

Two years ago a cornerstone of craft beer passed away unexpectedly. Herb Lindtveit, a friend and colleague to several of our brewers, influenced craft brewing in Massachusetts and beyond. For 20 years, he worked at Boston Beer Works. It was there that he met Jack Hendler, who went on to start Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers in Framingham. Herb joined the Jack’s Abby team as brewery manager, where he worked for eight years, and helped grow them to grow operations. Herb also served as president for the Master of Brewing Association of the America’s New England chapter for a number of years.

Throughout his career, Herb impacted so many brewer’s throughout our region. As our Head Brewer, Rich, said, “We’re really lucky over at the Sam Adams Boston Brewery [because we’ll] have influence from Herb for a long time because so many of our brewers in Boston were either directly taught by him or taught by people that were taught by him or interacted with him in Master Brewer’s meetings.” For this reason, we had to do something to properly commemorate Herb.

We’ve joined our friends at Jack’s Abby in the In Herb We Trust brew. This light lager, brewed with Herb's own recipe, is now available on draft and in cans, with the proceeds going to the MBAA In Herb We Trust Foundation, a scholarship for New England brewers.

To listen to a compilation of stories about Herb from brewers around the country and learn more about his impact, check out our In Herb We Trust podcast episode.

This one’s for you, Herb. Cheers!
